Retinol vs retinal vs adapalene: choosing your first retinoid

beautydewlabs editorial · Published June 26, 2026 · Updated July 4, 2026 · 5 min read

Three over-the-counter vitamin-A options, three different jobs. A plain map of the retinoid ladder so your first one isn't your last.

The retinoid family is the most-studied anti-aging ingredient in skincare — the landmark 1988 trial showed prescription tretinoin improved photoaging in every participant who finished, with no improvement on the control side [1]. But most people start over the counter, where the three real choices are retinol, retinal, and adapalene. They sit at different rungs of one ladder, and picking the right rung is the difference between a habit you keep and a peeling face you quit in week two.

FAQ

Is retinal stronger than retinol?

Yes. Retinal (retinaldehyde) is one conversion step from active retinoic acid, while retinol is two — so retinal is more potent and typically works faster, at the cost of a bit more potential irritation. Both are weaker and less directly evidenced than prescription tretinoin, but they act on the same pathway.

Should I start with adapalene or retinol?

Match it to your goal. Adapalene is the better first retinoid for acne — it has 12-week trial evidence and targets follicular clogging. Retinol (or retinal) is the better start for fine lines, tone, and texture. Both are OTC; adapalene 0.1% is sold specifically for acne.

Can I use a retinoid while pregnant?

Standard advice is no. All topical retinoids — retinol, retinal, adapalene, tretinoin — are placed on the pregnancy avoid list as a precaution, because the vitamin-A pathway is the one with demonstrated oral risk. If you want an anti-aging option meanwhile, bakuchiol is not a retinoid and matched retinol in a head-to-head trial; still, clear any pregnancy routine with your provider.
