A 2025 ex-vivo study on human skin explants — sponsored by Kenvue, maker of the hyaluronic-acid gel/cream moisturizers tested, and not yet independently replicated — found that layering a moisturizer immediately before OR after a retinoid (an "open sandwich") did not reduce the retinoid's measured bioactivity, while moisturizing on both sides cut it roughly 3-fold. The moisturizers tested were hyaluronic-acid-based, not ceramide-based, so this finding doesn't require a ceramide product.
