What it does

moderate evidence

Benefits

  • Adds a sweet, floral, lavender-like scent note

Side effects

  • Can cause allergic contact dermatitis in sensitised people
  • Oxidises readily in air to hydroperoxides that are much stronger allergens than fresh linalool; in European patch-test studies about 7% of people tested reacted to oxidised linalool, so older or air-exposed products are more sensitising
  • Offers no skin-care benefit — it is there for fragrance only

Who it's for

People who want a fragranced product and are not sensitive or allergic to fragrance

Who should be careful

Anyone with a fragrance allergy, sensitive or eczema-prone skin, or a known reaction to scented products
