What it does
It dissolves water-loving ingredients and acts as the vehicle that carries and distributes everything else through the formula. The water used in cosmetics is purified and deionized so that residual minerals don't destabilize the product. It is the base medium, not an active treatment.
Benefits
- Primary solvent that dissolves water-soluble ingredients which won't mix into oils
- Acts as the carrier that distributes actives and other components evenly through a product
- Purified and deionized for cosmetic use, which helps formulas stay stable over time
- Gives lotions, gels, and serums their spreadable, lightweight texture
Side effects
- Inert and non-irritating as a formulation base
- Note that water on its own does not deeply hydrate skin; prolonged plain-water contact (like long bathing) can actually be drying, which is why formulas pair it with humectants and occlusives
Who it's for
All skin types; it is the near-universal base of water-containing cosmetics
Who should be careful
No cautions as a formulation base
